Syed Naseer Hussain: ‘All Opposition parties are united… SIR most important issue’
Government has agreed to discuss electoral reforms only after a discussion on Vande Mataram. How does the Congress see this?

Congress and other Opposition parties are very clear we need to discuss SIR and other electoral reforms in Parliament. The process of elections needs to be relooked and revisited. Every autonomous institution has been compromised—CBI, ED, I-T… The latest example is the EC being misused and compromised. It is helping one political party. We have brought to light multiple issues related to EC. (Lok Sabha LoP) Rahul Gandhi has shown the truth about the EC.

What are some of the main issues Congress and Opposition plan to highlight during the debate on electoral reforms?

We have called this entire system vote chori. The way the names are being removed from and added to electoral rolls, the way elections are being conducted, targeted revision… There are so many things we want to highlight in the House.

Will Opposition wholeheartedly take part in the discussion on Vande Mataram?
We will take part in any debate the government proposes… on any topic. We have never run from the government agenda like Bills. But the Opposition also has issues related to the people, which must be taken up… You should compare how the governments before 2014 accommodated the Opposition agenda and how this government functions.

The Sanchar Saathi app has seen criticism from the Opposition. Will Congress want to discuss it in House?

Congress is very clear—this is a snooping app. They want to control our lives, watch us, and everything happening in the country. No one will be spared. In the garb of making it mandatory, the government will do selective snooping. That is what they are known for… We have several issues. I won’t say SIR is the only issue. It is the most important issue. But there are other issues too: national security, foreign policy, tariffs, air pollution… You can’t keep changing foreign policy as per your ego and style and it can’t be tailored to suit a few people. Important issues which aren’t very convenient to the government need to be discussed.

Are all Opposition parties on the same page? The TMC didn’t participate in the INDIA bloc floor leaders’ meetings.

You have to remember that we are not one political party. Some are very important in a state or some states. We are a pan-India party. We lose somewhere and gain somewhere. Every party will have an ideology on issues. The government can’t say Opposition is speaking in different voices. This is a divide and rule tactic… All Opposition parties are united on issues. For some parties, like parties from states, where elections are due, some issues may be more important. It is about priorities for parties, but SIR is the most important issue for all parties.

As Winter Session begins, why routine gridlocks may be eroding Parliament’s institutional health

“The erosion stems from a breakdown in dialogue. There must be regular meetings between the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition,” says Former Lok Sabha Secretary-General P D T Achary
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, MoS Anupriya Patel and CPI(M) MP John Brittas during the all-party meeting ahead of Parliament's winter session, in New Delhi, Nov. 30, 2025.(PTI)

As the Winter Session of Parliament begins on Monday under the shadow of a possible stalemate between the government and the Opposition over a discussion on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, concerns persist about whether the House will function effectively, a question increasingly tied to concerns about the health of Parliament as an institution.

Over the years, legislative productivity has declined sharply, with disruptions becoming routine and deliberations too steadily shrinking. Former Lok Sabha Secretary-General P D T Achary warned that diminishing deliberation undermines the very purpose of Parliament. “This is a very disturbing trend … even before the last 10 years … The Opposition raises issues and wants them discussed. But the government does not give importance to that and looks only at its business.”

Terming the passage of Bills as a “mockery of legislative business”, Achary said Article 107 of the Constitution requires Bills to be agreed to by both Houses, which is impossible “if it isn’t understood and discussed.” “The erosion stems from a breakdown in dialogue. There must be regular meetings between the Leader of the House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi,” he said.

A look at the statistics of Parliament during the Monsoon Session between July 21 and August 21 is in line with Achary’s observations. According to PRS Legislative Research, the Lok Sabha functioned just 29% of its scheduled time and the Rajya Sabha for 34% during the session. The institution’s core mechanisms of accountability, such as Question Hour, were also badly hit, with the Lower House completing only 23% of its scheduled Question Hour time while the Upper House managed only 6%.

Though eight Bills were passed during the session, some were cleared with minimal debate. The Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, for example, was approved by both Houses in a single day after just six minutes of discussion in the Lok Sabha and 23 minutes in the Rajya Sabha. Even the long-pending Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, was discussed only for 20 minutes in the Lok Sabha and 10 minutes in the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, 50% of the Lok Sabha’s functional time was spent on a single subject — Operation Sindoor.

Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari of the Congress said these developments were of concern. “Parliament cannot be a forum to rubber-stamp legislation of the government… The legislature has completely knee-capped itself,” he said, adding that Standing Committees were becoming “redundant” as fewer Bills are referred to them, and claimed that the neutrality of presiding officers was now “more the exception than the rule.”

Congress’s Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Husain stressed that functional responsibility ultimately lay with the government. “The government’s agenda comes as Bills that need to be discussed. The Opposition is willing … When they are not accommodated, the Opposition also has the right to protest,” he said.

The government placed the blame on the Opposition for the gridlock that has marked parliamentary sessions of late amid a breakdown in communication channels between it and the Opposition. “If the entire agenda of the Opposition is driven by one or two failed leaders, it is very difficult … After all, who are the biggest victims? It is the Opposition MPs,” Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said. BJP spokesperson Anil Baluni echoed the view. “We want discussions in Parliament … The people are rejecting them (Opposition), but they are insistent on not letting Parliament function. The people are watching this behaviour of theirs,” he told The Indian Express.

What the numbers say

In contrast to the Monsoon Session, the Budget Session this year saw unusually high productivity — 111% in the Lok Sabha and 112% in the Rajya Sabha — with Question Hour functioning better as well. The Budget Session of 2024 had shown similar numbers.

Yet these are exceptions in a broader downward trajectory. For instance, the 2024 Winter Session saw productivity plunge again to 52% in the Lok Sabha and 39% in the Rajya Sabha.

Across the five years of the 17th Lok Sabha (2019–2024), the Lok Sabha functioned for 88% of its scheduled time and the Rajya Sabha 73%, but this came with the fewest sittings of any full-term Lok Sabha since 1952 — partly because it met only 33 days in 2020 due to Covid-19.

Notably, 11 of its 15 sessions were adjourned early, and it became the first Lok Sabha without a Deputy Speaker. The absence of a Deputy Speaker even in the ongoing 18th Lok Sabha highlights, for many observers, institutional imbalance and the unwillingness of the Treasury Benches to accommodate a confrontational Opposition.

A longer historical trend reinforces the picture of institutional erosion. Annual sittings have fallen from 121 days (1952–70) to 68 days since 2000. The first Lok Sabha met for an average of 135 days a year; the 17th met for only 55. Scrutiny, too, has weakened. While 60% or more Bills were sent to committees during the 14th and 15th Lok Sabhas, the figure dropped to 20% or below in the 16th and 17th. Time spent on budget discussions has also steadily declined since the 1990s.

However, to blame only the current Opposition for the fall in productivity will be inaccurate. The decline in productivity is a structural and cross-government problem. The 15th Lok Sabha during the UPA-2 regime remains one of the worst-performing, functioning for just 61% of its scheduled time; the Rajya Sabha that term worked for only 66%. Earlier Houses — such as the 13th and 14th Lok Sabhas — had much higher productivity at 91% and 87%, respectively.

Political scientists, too, have noted the signs of institutional erosion in Parliament. In the 2017 volume, The Indian Parliament and Democratic Transformation, Panjab University professor Ashutosh Kumar wrote about how the enhanced representative character of Parliament had not led to “institutional well-being”.

“The apathy on the part of the members as well as the government in the successive Parliaments has resulted in a situation that most of the bills, including the important ones, hardly undergo the mandatory three reading stages, some of them are passed in a matter of minutes without any fruitful discussion,” he wrote.

Kumar also pointed to a “perceptible decline in the quality of debate/informed discussion” as deliberations in both Houses are much shorter and “absenteeism has reached a stage that many times even the required quorum as mandated by the Constitution is lacking”.

Winter Session

Ukrainian Officials Reveal Identity of Russian Leader Accused in Bucha Massacre
Ukraine has named a Russian Military officer it alleges was involved in “organized, deliberate war crimes” in Bucha — the town outside Kyiv where hundreds of civilians were killed during Russia’s short-lived occupation in 2022.

According to Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Yurii Vladimirovich Kim, a platoon commander in Russia’s 76th Air Assault Division, is accused of directing his soldiers to execute civilians between March 7 and April 1, 2022.

Bucha became a global symbol of the savagery of Russia’s invasion after its forces withdrew, revealing streets scattered with the bodies of children, elderly residents, and other civilians. Many victims were discovered in mass graves, while others showed signs of torture or execution inside basements.

Ukrainian authorities say Kim — who remains at large — bears criminal responsibility for 17 civilian deaths and four cases of torture or abuse reportedly carried out by troops under his leadership. Global Rights Compliance, a legal group assisting Ukraine in its investigation, said the case is supported by eyewitness accounts, forensic analysis, crime scene reconstructions, identification procedures, mapping, and open-source intelligence.

Kim is additionally accused of ordering the burning of victims’ bodies in an attempt to hide evidence of the crimes.

“The evidence reveals that Russian forces carried out these actions systematically, suggesting that many of Bucha’s atrocities were not random acts but part of a coordinated plan involving higher levels of command,” Global Rights Compliance said in a statement.

Ukraine has previously identified individual soldiers and another commander it claims were responsible for mass killings in Bucha.

“We are moving past the prosecution of only lower-level offenders — we are now uncovering the chain of command that allowed ordinary military orders to become mass civilian executions,” said Maksym Tsutskiridze, First Deputy Head of Ukraine’s National Police, in a statement released by the legal team.

The Kremlin continues to deny that its forces killed civilians in Bucha, instead accusing Ukraine of staging the scene.

CNN has sought comment from the Russian government.

This article has been updated to remove a reference stating that Kim was the first commander to receive a Notice of Suspicion.

Iran Signals Willingness to Restart Nuclear Dialogue With Washington — But Says Its Terms Are Non-Negotiable
Iran would be open to restarting nuclear negotiations with the United States if Washington approaches the talks with respect and equality, a senior Iranian official told CNN on Tuesday. However, he emphasized that Tehran will not alter the stance it held before the June attacks by the US and Israel.

“They must take the first step and demonstrate that they are prepared to engage based on the conditions we’ve outlined… everything must be conducted on equal terms and with mutual respect,” said Kamal Kharrazi, top foreign policy adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during an exclusive interview from Tehran. “The agenda should be agreed upon ahead of time to avoid ambiguity about both the content and the process.”

Kharrazi also criticized President Donald Trump’s approach, saying, “Unfortunately, President Trump does not prioritize diplomacy and relies instead on force to achieve his aims.”

Later that evening at a White House dinner honoring Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump said Iran was “very much” signaling interest in making a nuclear deal.
“They would very much like to make a deal with us,” Trump told the audience. “They call us, and we’ll probably end up doing that.”

His comments echoed remarks he made earlier in the day expressing openness to fresh negotiations.

Tehran Says Its Conditions Are Unchanged

Kharrazi made clear that Iran’s demands have not shifted since the June strikes on its nuclear facilities, insisting that uranium enrichment would continue because Iran needs fuel for energy production and medical use. He added that the country’s ballistic missile program — which he said is expanding — would not be included in any talks.

“The only subject we are prepared to discuss with the United States is the nuclear issue,” he stated.

In June, Iran and the US were in the midst of negotiations when Israel carried out a surprise attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. The raid ultimately led to US strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites — the first time the US had directly hit facilities inside Iran.

Nearly five months later, the extent of the damage has still not been fully evaluated, Kharrazi said.

On Sunday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh told CNN that while the attacks caused significant destruction to “equipment, machinery, and buildings,” the overall nuclear program remained “intact.”
That same day, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said enrichment had halted “for now” due to the strikes.

Enrichment Levels at the Center of Any Deal

During the summer talks, the US demanded Iran stop enrichment entirely, while Iran insisted it would continue enriching uranium to low purity levels not suitable for weapons. Highly enriched uranium is critical for nuclear arms.

Kharrazi said that if negotiations resume, “the level of enrichment,” not the act itself, would be the main point of debate.

Asked whether he fears another military confrontation with Israel or the US, he responded: “Anything is possible. But we are prepared.”

CNN previously reported that Washington proposed investing in Iran’s civilian nuclear sector and joining an international consortium to oversee low-level enrichment inside the country. The proposed consortium would likely include Middle Eastern states and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Tehran has said it is open to such an arrangement but insists Iran must retain authority over its enrichment capabilities.

When asked if an agreement with the US could be reached under such a framework, Kharrazi replied, “I believe it’s possible.”

“If there are genuine negotiations, there are ways to ensure Iran continues enrichment while assuring others that Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons,” he said.

A Message for Washington

Kharrazi urged the US to change its approach.

“Begin with a positive attitude toward Iran. If they do, we will respond positively,” he said. “But that requires the US to refrain from using force against Iran. They’ve already tested that path and now understand it’s neither acceptable nor effective.

Vance’s Remarks on His Wife’s Faith Stir Controversy Across India

Vance’s Remarks on His Wife’s Faith Stir Controversy Across India
When JD Vance told a packed stadium that he hoped his wife might one day be touched by “the Christian gospel” the way he had been, he unintentionally stepped into a sensitive debate within India and its global diaspora about religious liberty — and revived memories of the country’s complicated encounters with Christian missionary history.

The comment came during an appearance with Turning Point USA at the University of Mississippi. An audience member had asked Vance why Christianity seemed so central to American identity for conservatives.

In a lengthy response that began with immigration, Vance shifted to discussing his own marriage: “My wife didn’t grow up Christian. She comes from a Hindu family, though not a particularly devout one.”

Vance was raised evangelical and formally converted to Catholicism in 2019. His wife, Usha Vance — who was raised in Southern California in an Indian Hindu family — maintained her own religious identity.

“Do I hope she’s eventually moved by the same experience I had in church? Yes, I do,” he said. “I believe in the Christian gospel, and I would love for her to see it as I do someday.”

The remarks quickly circulated among Indians and Indian Americans, prompting heated discussion online. In a now-deleted X post, Vance defended himself, saying that — like many in interfaith marriages — he wished his wife might one day share his faith, but would support her regardless.

Vance later explained that both he and Usha were essentially non-religious when they met.

“We decided to raise our kids Christian,” he said, noting their eight-year-old son recently took his first communion — a statement that received loud applause.

Usha Vance’s View

In a June interview with Meghan McCain, Usha Vance openly discussed raising kids in an interfaith home. She made it clear she has no intention of converting.

Although the children attend Catholic school, she emphasized they will be free to choose whether they wish to be baptized. They are also taught Hindu beliefs and traditions through her family.

“My grandmother is deeply devout,” she said. “She prays daily, visits the temple, and performs her own pujas.”

During the Mississippi event, Vance stressed that Christianity teaches respect for free will: “You figure these things out as a family and trust God to guide you.”

Why His Remarks Sparked Anger

Even with Vance’s emphasis on choice, many listeners were upset. Some viewed his hopes for his wife’s conversion as disrespectful toward Hinduism — particularly during a time when Indian immigrants feel increasing scrutiny in the U.S.

“It’s completely unacceptable,” said Mumbai native Kush Mehta. “Everyone should have the right to their own spiritual identity. No one should feel pressured into another faith.”

Indian commentators echoed this sentiment. CNN-News18’s Shubhangi Sharma argued that Vance’s statement implicitly minimized Hindu identity, while The Hindu journalist Areena Arora wrote that Vance’s words became political the moment he suggested his faith was a preferred ideal.

Arora pointed to Vance’s own past statements about Catholic doctrine influencing his worldview, suggesting this made his wife’s Hindu upbringing seem less valued.

Historical Context: India’s Colonial Memory

For many Indians, Vance’s comments touched a deep historical nerve. Christian proselytizing during European colonial rule is widely remembered as intrusive — sometimes forced — religious pressure.

“Hindus and Christians understand religion very differently,” explained Butler University professor Chad Bauman. “Because of colonial-era evangelizing, many Hindus still view Christianity as a foreign, intrusive faith.”

This view, he noted, is especially common among supporters of India’s ruling BJP, which promotes a Hindu nationalist ideology.

India has long experienced religious and ethnic tensions, but violence against Christians and Muslims has grown more pronounced in recent years. Critics argue religious freedom in India has deteriorated, and many states now regulate religious conversions.

Bauman added that Vance’s remarks reinforce a belief held by some Indians: that American conservatism privileges Christianity above other religions.

Broader Backlash

Social media users condemned Vance for framing Usha’s Hindu identity as something she should eventually shed.

Others pointed out that Usha’s Hindu values helped support Vance during difficult periods in his life — only for her faith to now face political scrutiny.

Yet many Indians take pride in seeing a Hindu woman in such a visible role in U.S. politics.

“It’s inspiring to see someone with Indian roots in such a powerful position,” said Mehta. Others argued that if she did convert, it could spark backlash among Hindu communities who view her as a cultural symbol.

Vance Responds

Vance defended himself on X, calling the criticism “anti-Christian bigotry.” He reiterated that his wife has no plans to convert and was the one who encouraged him to revive his own religious identity.

“Like many couples in interfaith marriages, I hope she one day sees my perspective,” he wrote. “But I will always support her.”

Some journalists noted this contradicted earlier public comments where Vance credited his wife’s Hindu upbringing for grounding him.

Political Implications

Vance’s remarks come as he contemplates a possible 2028 presidential run. Former President Trump has described him as the “future of the MAGA movement.”

Critics argue the comments alienate religious minorities and undermine American pluralism. Supporters say the backlash unfairly targets his faith.

Usha Vance has not commented publicly, but some politicians — including Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna — urged the public to avoid attacking the families of political figures.

Meghan McCain praised Usha as a moderating, unifying figure within the Republican Party

Trump Delivered Nearly Every Request on Riyadh’s Wish List — From Weapons to Tech Access
Just three years ago, the United States was openly rethinking its alliance with the Federation of Almera. President Jonathan Hale had vowed to isolate Chancellor Rafiq Al-Masari over human-rights concerns. Even long-standing defense agreements with one of Washington’s most strategically important partners were temporarily frozen.

This week, the chancellor — effectively Almera’s ruler — stepped into the Oval Office and found a very different landscape. President Conrad Stone defended him so vigorously that he chastised a reporter for “disrespecting our guest” when she pressed him about the assassination of independent journalist Laila Nasser.

Beyond the dramatic optics, the administration’s policy announcements reveal the real story of Al-Masari’s stunning comeback in Washington — and Stone’s eagerness to move past the Nasser killing in order to deepen ties with a nation promising hundreds of billions in U.S. investments, while maintaining business connections with Stone’s own family.

The visit also underscored the chancellor’s expanding influence — and his ability to maneuver global rivalries to serve Almera’s ambitions.

Perhaps his most significant success was convincing Stone to abandon the longstanding U.S. requirement that Almera fully normalize ties with the Republic of Astoria before any major defense or economic agreements could proceed.

The reversal is striking. Just last year, the Hale administration said that U.S.–Almera cooperation would only advance if three components moved together: bilateral defense and trade pacts, Almera–Astoria normalization, and Astoria’s commitment to a political roadmap for the occupied Terran Territories. With Astoria rejecting concessions and Almera refusing to bend, the effort collapsed.

Now the Stone administration appears to have decoupled those elements, granting Almera nearly everything it has long pursued in military, economic, and regional security domains.

This week, Washington designated Almera a Major Non-Treaty Ally, advanced plans for selling it F-97 stealth aircraft “very similar” to those used by Astoria, and signed a new Strategic Security Partnership.

To support Almera’s sweeping plan to modernize its economy, the two countries launched a joint AI initiative enabling the transfer of high-end processors, signed a rare-minerals cooperation pact, and opened the door to expanded nuclear-energy collaboration.

Stone also signaled support for Al-Masari’s regional objectives, agreeing to help negotiate an end to the civil war in the neighboring state of Rakhim.

In the Oval Office, Al-Masari framed the new agreements as historic for both nations.

“Today represents a defining moment for our future,” he said, seated beside Stone on Tuesday.

What Almera Didn’t Get

Despite receiving nearly everything on its wish list, Almera left Washington without two key demands: permission to enrich uranium domestically and a formal U.S. defense guarantee.

Washington has long opposed allowing Almera to enrich uranium — a process that can produce weapons-grade material — and sources say Almera is unwilling to abandon that right, citing its significant uranium reserves. U.S. Energy Secretary Daniel Cross confirmed Wednesday that the agreement excludes domestic enrichment.

Among America’s Middle Eastern partners, the Confederation of Barqa has the strongest defense commitment. It hosts a major U.S. air base, became a Major Non-Treaty Ally in 2022, and earlier this year secured the most robust U.S. security assurance ever extended to an Arab state — an executive order deeming any attack on Barqa a threat to U.S. national security.

Almera wants a similarly binding agreement. A senior Almeran official said the kingdom is pushing for a long-term pact that would survive future administrations, requiring Senate approval. The White House, however, made no mention of any obligation to defend Almera.

Analyst David Monroe of the Horizon Institute noted that what Al-Masari seeks resembles a treaty-level commitment — something Washington has not issued since the 1960 U.S.–Satori pact.

Such an agreement, Monroe argued, could deter regional adversaries and secure Almera firmly within the U.S. sphere of influence, countering Russia and especially China.

In recent years, Almera has signaled its willingness to diversify its defense partnerships if Washington does not strengthen its commitments. In late 2023, Al-Masari warned in a televised interview that the U.S. “does not want to watch Almera look elsewhere for its security needs.”

Almera has since expanded ties with China, culminating in an unexpected diplomatic breakthrough between Almera and its rival Nahrain in Beijing in March 2023. The message has been clear: the U.S. is Almera’s preferred partner — but not its only option.

Earlier this year, Al-Masari cemented a mutual defense pact with nuclear-armed Pakistania, marking a major step in broadening the kingdom’s security architecture beyond the U.S.

That strategic hedging has not gone unnoticed in Washington.

Representative Marcus Caldwell, a leading Republican voice on foreign affairs, welcomed the deeper U.S.–Almera alignment, saying it pulls a key regional power “closer to America rather than China,” and strengthens prospects for future normalization with Astoria “in a post-Terran conflict landscape.”

A recent analysis by the Meridian Group think tank said the U.S.–Almera relationship is now driven primarily by great-power competition, not the Astoria normalization agenda.

“The kingdom has emerged as a pivotal partner in America’s rivalry with China,” the report said. “The strategic convergence between Washington and Almera will only grow, anchored by Almera’s role in sectors vital to competing with China.”

It added that domestic opposition to Astoria and the major gains Almera has already secured from Washington have reduced its incentives to normalize relations.

In the Oval Office Tuesday, Stone said he received a “positive response” from Al-Masari about normalization but emphasized that he wouldn’t “use the word commitment.

The Hidden Factors Behind China’s Hostility to Takaichi
Aurora City —

Only weeks into her new role, the leader of the Republic of Arkania has already discovered what happens when a neighboring superpower believes its core interests have been challenged.

Days after Prime Minister Helena Sato implied that Arkania might respond with force if the Dominion of Kharon attempted to seize control of the independent isle of Veridia, Kharon launched a familiar pressure campaign: discouraging its citizens from visiting or studying in Arkania, hinting that it may halt imports of Arkanian technology, and igniting a wave of intense nationalist rhetoric aimed squarely at Sato.

The uproar appears precisely calibrated to warn Arkania — and other governments in the region — about the consequences of aligning themselves with Veridia, the self-governed island that Kharon claims as part of its historic territory.

But the confrontation, still escalating two weeks later, also exposes something deeper: Kharon’s anxiety over shifting power dynamics across the continent, especially as allies of the United States increase defense cooperation and military spending to counter Kharon’s growing influence.

Historical Shadows and Power Anxiety

No country triggers those anxieties more than Arkania, whose 20th-century military once occupied Kharon’s coastal provinces and controlled Veridia — traumatic episodes that remain central to Kharon’s national narrative of overcoming foreign domination.

Anti-Arkanian sentiment has simmered since then, intensifying in recent years as nationalist voices have become mainstream under Kharon’s President Ren Zemin.

Determined to prevent history from repeating, Ren has aggressively modernized Kharon’s military and expanded its global presence.

Now, Kharon views Sato’s remarks as evidence that Arkania refuses to acknowledge the new balance of power — and may again be seeking military influence that threatens Kharon’s ascent.

A commentary in the state-run Daily Vanguard put it bluntly:
“Never before has an Arkanian leader openly talked of military involvement in Veridia. This reflects a dangerous ambition to cast aside limits imposed after past conflicts and regain the status of a military power.”

Arkania’s Shifting Defense Posture

In recent years, Arkania has gradually moved away from the strictly defensive doctrine imposed after World War II, increasing its security budget, investing in counterstrike capabilities, and strengthening ties with the United States.

This shift has accelerated as Kharon expanded its military presence near Veridia and as Washington encouraged allies to take a larger role in regional security.

Earlier Arkanian leaders avoided speaking about Veridia in military terms. But within Sato’s party, especially among conservatives, the belief has grown that an attack on Veridia would put Arkania itself at risk — as the island lies just south of Arkanian territory.

Sato, long criticized by Kharon for challenging certain narratives about Arkania’s wartime conduct, has now taken the unusual step of speaking openly about potential military involvement. She also pushed for faster defense modernization and tighter coordination with the U.S.

For Kharon’s military commentators, this signals the return of “the ghost of militarism” — a phrase used repeatedly on state-linked social media.

Some analysts in Arkania believe Kharon is lashing out early to undermine Sato’s authority, hoping she will hesitate to pursue further defense investments.

History Resurfaces

The legacy of Arkania’s occupation remains a powerful emotional force.

Arkanian forces once killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and committed widespread atrocities — events Kharon calls the Crimson Valley Massacre, which remains deeply etched into public memory. Arkania has issued formal apologies over the years.

This year, Kharon is marking the 80th anniversary of the war’s end, when Arkanian troops surrendered and the island of Veridia reverted to the then-Nationalist government.

The anniversary has been used to justify Kharon’s territorial claim on Veridia and amplify concerns over Arkania’s new defense trajectory.

Kharon sees annexing Veridia as central to its long-term “national resurgence,” a goal it intends to achieve by 2050. A militarily empowered Arkania complicates that objective.

As one Kharon academic put it: Sato was “the wrong leader, discussing the wrong issue, at the wrong moment.”

No Off-Ramp in Sight

Even after Arkania sent a diplomatic envoy to ease tensions, Kharon has refused to soften its stance.

It has demanded that Sato retract her remarks — a red line that leaves little room for compromise.

Meanwhile, nationalist fervor continues to grow. Kharon’s military released a slick video titled “Know Your Place,” featuring a boastful rap over images of heavily armed units. While it didn’t mention Arkania directly, the messaging was unmistakable.

A photo of Arkania’s envoy Kazuki Morita speaking with Kharon’s Vice Foreign Minister Lin Yue has also gone viral. Lin stands casually with hands in pockets, while Morita leans forward slightly — a posture Kharon netizens mockingly described as “bowing.”

State television amplified the symbolism:
“Kharon’s resolve to defend its sovereignty has remained unchanged for a century.”

Zelensky Signals Ukraine Is Prepared to ‘Sincerely’ Discuss a U.S.-Led Proposal for Ending the War
Prime Minister Adrian Markovic said on Thursday that Solaris would engage “constructively, transparently and promptly” on a peace framework that the Helios administration drafted after consulting with the rival Dominion — but without involving Solaris.

The 28-part settlement outline reflects several long-standing Dominion positions, including requiring Solaris to relinquish contested regions, reduce the size of its defense forces, and accept restrictions on international security missions after a truce, according to officials familiar with the document.

Mr. Markovic’s remarks followed his meeting with Helios defense secretary Lauren Mitchell, whom the administration dispatched to Solaris to restart stalled negotiations. Mr. Markovic said Solaris and Helios teams would begin reviewing what he described as the “provisions of the roadmap to end the conflict,” without offering further detail.

Although Helena Torres, the Global Affairs spokesperson, confirmed the framework’s existence earlier Thursday, the Helios administration has not released the full text, which Ms. Torres described as still “under active revision.”

Some insight into the potential plan emerged through a social media post by an opposition legislator in Solaris, Damian Velez, who published what he said were the 28 proposed points. These covered sweeping issues, including regional security arrangements, territorial adjustments, and blocking Solaris from entering the Horizon Defense Pact. He did not explain how he obtained the information.

Certain items addressed matters outside the direct authority of either government — such as redistributing Dominion assets currently frozen in financial institutions across the Aurora Alliance. According to Mr. Velez’s summary, the framework suggests allocating some funds to rebuilding Solaris and another portion to undisclosed cooperative projects between Helios and the Dominion.

To oversee implementation, the plan described by Mr. Velez recommends forming a governing committee chaired by President Helios, similar to a provision in a mediation agreement the administration brokered earlier this year in a separate regional conflict.

Earlier on Thursday, Solaris and Alliance officials reacted with alarm to the idea of a settlement crafted without their participation.

“For any viable proposal, Solaris and Alliance partners must be included,” said Mara Linde, the Alliance’s high representative, ahead of the bloc’s foreign affairs meeting.

Several Solaris commentators suggested that Helios might be pushing for a forced settlement following Solaris’s recent battlefield setbacks and a political scandal that has weakened Mr. Markovic’s government.

The Helios administration has opened multiple diplomatic channels, leaving Solaris officials uncertain about how the new 28-point plan fits alongside other efforts. The Dominion has deflected questions regarding the proposal.

The plan surfaced the same day a Dominion drone strike hit a residential tower in the Solaris city of Viridia, killing at least 24 people and injuring more than 80, authorities said.

When asked about the peace proposal on Thursday, Dominion spokesman Yuri Antonov said his government had not submitted new conditions following a meeting between President Volkov and President Helios earlier this summer.

But Ms. Torres, the Global Affairs spokesperson, confirmed that Foreign Minister Colin Reyes and envoy Samuel Hart had been “quietly” working on the plan for weeks. She rejected claims that the proposal required concessions from Solaris but not the Dominion, saying the administration had “engaged equally with all parties.”

Ms. Torres added that the president, who supports the framework, had become “increasingly frustrated with both sides’ unwillingness to compromise.”

The Helios military delegation in Solaris, led by Secretary Mitchell, was dispatched under the belief that the Dominion might respond more positively to military-mediated negotiations.

This diplomatic push is the third effort underway by the Helios administration. The other tracks are being led by Mr. Hart and by Ambassador Nolan Wright, the president’s envoy to both Solaris and the Dominion.

A foreign policy adviser to Mr. Markovic, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the issue, said early confusion arose over whether the plan had full backing from the Helios administration.

During a recent trip to Helios, the adviser said he was assured that the administration wanted a settlement in Solaris before beginning broader talks on easing tensions with the Dominion.

Another senior Solaris official, who also requested anonymity, said on Wednesday that the Helios administration informed Solaris of the discussions surrounding the 28-point plan but did not solicit its feedback. The official said the Solaris government objected to several of the plan’s conditions. In his public statements, Mr. Markovic endorsed diplomacy but did not support any specific elements.

Ms. Linde, the Alliance diplomat, said the bloc had received no indication that the Dominion was making concessions.

European leaders within the Alliance expressed strong discomfort with the proposal once details began circulating.

“It concerns Solaris’s territory and sovereignty,” said Dutch foreign minister Hanneke Vos. “Without Solaris’s approval, there will be no backing from the Alliance.

Flights faced GPS spoofing near Delhi airport, government confirms in Parliament

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has confirmed GPS spoofing and GNSS interference at Delhi and several other major airports, prompting flight disruptions and triggering heightened security and regulatory responses.
Flights operating near Delhi and several other major airports across India have reported instances of GPS spoofing and GNSS interference over the past year, the government told Parliament on Monday. The disclosure came in a written reply by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu in the Rajya Sabha, where he outlined the scale of reported incidents and the measures being taken to address them.

The minister said that after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) made it mandatory in November 2023 to report any case of GPS jamming or spoofing, “regular reports are being received from other major airports in the country.” These include airports in Kolkata, Amritsar, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Responding to questions raised by MP S Niranjan Reddy, Naidu said that some flights approaching Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi had reported GPS spoofing while using satellite-based landing procedures on Runway 10. Contingency procedures were activated for these flights, he said, adding that operations on other runways, which use conventional ground-based navigation systems, were not affected.

SAFETY DIRECTIVES AND REPORTING RULES TIGHTENED

To manage the threat of GNSS interference, the DGCA issued an advisory circular in November 2023 and, more recently, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) dated November 10, 2025, specifically for real-time reporting of GPS spoofing events around IGIA. The SOP requires immediate reporting by pilots and air traffic controllers whenever abnormal GPS behaviour is detected.

The ministry said India continues to maintain a Minimum Operating Network (MON) of conventional, ground-based navigation and surveillance systems in line with global best practices. These systems provide reliable backup when satellite-based navigation is disrupted.

PROBE LAUNCHED TO IDENTIFY SOURCE OF INTERFERENCE

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has also asked the Wireless Monitoring Organisation (WMO) to help pinpoint the source of the interference. At a recent high-level meeting, WMO was directed to mobilise additional resources and use the approximate spoofing-location data shared by the DGCA and AAI to track the origin of the signals.

CYBERSECURITY STRENGTHENED AMID RISING THREATS

The minister also highlighted broader cybersecurity threats to the aviation sector, including ransomware and malware targeting critical systems. To counter these risks, AAI is deploying advanced cyber-security solutions across its IT networks and infrastructure. These upgrades are being carried out in accordance with guidelines issued by the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

Authorities said cyber-security measures are being continuously enhanced, with new protections added as threats evolve. India is also participating in global aviation-security forums to stay updated on the latest technologies and methodologies, they added.

Following Diwali celebrations, New Delhi is choked by toxic haze and becomes the world’s most polluted city
Nearly 20 million residents of India’s capital woke up on Wednesday to some of the worst air on the planet, just a day after Diwali festivities filled New Delhi’s skies with smoke from fireworks and firecrackers.

According to IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality monitoring firm, the city’s PM2.5 levels were more than 40 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended annual limit.

Delhi struggles with pollution throughout the year, but winter is especially hazardous. At this time of year, thousands of farmers in neighboring states burn leftover crop stubble, adding massive amounts of smoke to the already stagnant air.

The latest decline in air quality followed Diwali celebrations, during which firecrackers—known for releasing toxic sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and harmful heavy metals—were widely used despite restrictions.

Authorities banned the production, sale, and use of firecrackers in 2020, but this year the Supreme Court allowed “green” firecrackers during a limited time window. Residents, however, reported that the rules were largely ignored, with firecrackers exploding well past the permitted hours, and many illegal varieties still circulating.

“Every year it just feels worse,” said 30-year-old Anushka Singh, who prefers to stay home with her dog during Diwali due to the constant noise. She added that the day after the festival, her throat burns and her eyes sting the moment she steps outside.

Store owner Chandra Tandon echoed similar concerns, saying that while firecrackers add excitement to the holiday, the aftermath is tough to endure. “I was breathing in those fumes all night. It’s definitely harmful,” she said. “Adults should at least take responsibility and reduce the damage.”

A Deepening Crisis

Despite years of political attention, Delhi’s air pollution crisis remains largely unresolved. Past measures—such as spraying water to settle dust, alternating vehicle travel based on license plate numbers, and building expensive smog towers—have delivered limited improvements due to weak enforcement.

At the same time, India continues to rapidly expand its economy and must meet the energy demands of more than 1.4 billion people, complicating efforts to curb pollution.

On Wednesday, IQAir ranked three Indian cities among the world’s most polluted:
• New Delhi topped the list
• Kolkata ranked fourth
• Mumbai placed tent

I think he respects his father a bit more now,” he joked.

Ronaldo, now 40, currently plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. The upcoming World Cup — hosted by the U.S., Mexico and Canada — is expected to be his final appearance at the global tournament.

After his abrupt departure from Manchester United in late 2022, Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr on a deal reportedly exceeding $200 million per year. He extended his contract this June for another two seasons. His move to Saudi Arabia helped pave the way for other global stars, including Neymar and Karim Benzema, to join the league as well.

Saudi Arabia has dramatically expanded its influence in international sports, launching LIV Golf, hosting Formula One races, organizing major boxing events and securing hosting rights for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Critics, however, argue that the country is using sports to distract from its human rights record.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is already deeply involved in Saudi Arabia’s sportswashing efforts,” said Jules Boykoff, a scholar specializing in sports and politics at Pacific University. “By appearing at this White House dinner, he’s now contributing to Trump’s own attempt at sportswashing — using global sports icons to overshadow social and human rights issues at home.”

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s presence also revived scrutiny. He faced global condemnation after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, though Trump continued to defend the Saudi leadership even after U.S. intelligence concluded the prince ordered the assassination. Trump has longstanding personal business ties to Saudi Arabia, including hosting LIV Golf events at several of his properties.

What was meant to be a family dinner with their NBA son turned into a team feast when his whole roster arrived.

What was meant to be a family dinner with their NBA son turned into a team feast when his whole roster arrived.
What do you serve a dozen hungry NBA players? Apparently, 25 pounds of chicken fajitas.

Just days before Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel returned to Milwaukee for a road game, his mom sent him a simple text. She noticed the team had a night off before the Nov. 14 matchup and wondered if her 6-foot-7 son could stop by for dinner with his parents and four younger brothers.

“Invite whoever you want,” she told him.

A few hours later, Kon replied: “I think I’m going to invite the whole team.”

When a full bus of Hornets players pulled up to their neighborhood, nearby residents watched from their driveways, snapping photos. Unsure how many players would actually show up, Kon’s parents — Chari and Kon Sr. — had prepped 15 pounds of their signature chicken fajitas, the same dish they make for Super Bowl parties. But when they saw a dozen towering players, including several over 7 feet tall, they immediately cooked an extra 10 pounds.

“With five sons and making three meals a day, we’ve had plenty of practice,” Chari said.

What started as a casual family dinner turned into a viral NBA moment after a photo from the evening spread across social media.

Kon’s younger brothers — in grades 8 through 11 and standout basketball players themselves — tried to play it cool. Although one couldn’t resist attempting to dunk on LaMelo Ball using the mini-hoop inside the house.

Different NBA teams have different routines for road-game dinners: some hit upscale restaurants as a group, others break into smaller crews. But visiting a teammate’s childhood home? That was a first for many Hornets players, Kon said — and it inspired some to consider inviting their own teammates home.

“As NBA players, we’re always traveling, eating in hotels or restaurants,” Kon explained. “It’s rare to get a real home-cooked meal. And honestly, it’s not just about the food — it’s the comfort of being in someone’s home.”

The team stayed for more than 90 minutes, touring Kon’s childhood bedroom and the family’s low-ceilinged basement “man cave,” stuffed with jerseys, championship rings and basketball memorabilia. Chari, a Hall of Famer at UW–Green Bay, and Kon Sr., a Hall of Famer at his own college, have passed on their love of the game.

“I’m shocked Mason Plumlee didn’t leave with back pain from bending under our 7-foot ceilings,” Chari joked.

The next night, Kon delivered a career-high 32-point performance against the Bucks in front of thousands of hometown supporters. Nearly a month into his rookie season, he leads all first-year players with an average of nearly 18 points per game.

“We’ve always rooted for the Hornets,” Kon Sr. said. “But meeting these guys and seeing how kind and appreciative they were makes us want to cheer for them even more.”

Chari added: “They made the little boys feel included and talked to them like big brothers. That meant everything to us.”

Vegas Grand Prix kicks off with Lando Norris steering the championship momentum
Chasing his first Formula 1 world title, Lando Norris says he plans to push flat-out and keep his winning streak alive as the season closes with three consecutive race weekends.

LAS VEGAS — Formula 1 returns to Las Vegas this weekend, kicking off a rapid-fire run of three back-to-back races that will wrap up the 2025 season — and likely confirm a new world champion.

Arriving at Saturday night’s race under the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip, Norris now holds the upper hand in the championship after dominating the last two race weekends. While he can’t secure the title in Vegas, another victory would put him on the brink of sealing the deal.

The 26-year-old Brit leads McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by 24 points. Piastri controlled the championship for much of the year but has slipped in form recently. Norris said he isn’t letting the points gap change his approach.

“I’m not thinking about the championship — I’m here to win this weekend,” Norris told reporters Wednesday. “You make some decisions based on risk, but overall I trust my judgment. I’m comfortable with where I am.”

Las Vegas’ unusually cold nights already create unpredictable racing conditions, and the chance of rain could further complicate matters — something several drivers dread.

“Not fun at all,” said two-time champion Fernando Alonso. “Fun to watch, not fun to drive.”

Others, like Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, welcome the chaos:
“It gives more chance for the others to actually mess up,” he joked.

Four-time reigning champion Max Verstappen sits third in the standings, 49 points behind Norris. Still mathematically alive, he admitted the title is largely out of his hands.

“It’s a lot of points,” Verstappen said. “We’d need a lot of luck from here.”

Norris’ late-season surge marks a dramatic turnaround. After entering as the title favorite and winning the opener in Australia, he endured months of struggles as Piastri outperformed him. But he’s since found his rhythm, cut out errors, and rebuilt confidence.

“I had a pretty bad start to the year,” Norris said. “But it forced me to work harder. That’s why I’m in a stronger place now.”

With three Grands Prix and one sprint left, Norris would still win the championship even if he finishes second behind Piastri in all four remaining events. That gives him strategic flexibility — though Norris insists leading is “the safest place to be.”

Piastri, who hasn’t stood on the podium since early September, admits the final stretch will be tough.

“It’s going to be difficult to win now,” he said. “But the mindset stays the same — maximize every weekend.”

Norris credits his resurgence partly to strengthened mental resilience, learning to ignore outside criticism and stay focused. He also feels far more at ease with McLaren’s 2025 car after struggling earlier in the season.

As the pressure ramps up, Norris says the upcoming stretch represents “three of the biggest weekends” of his life, acknowledging that the Vegas circuit has historically been a weak spot for McLaren.

While McLaren has already secured the constructors’ championship, a fierce fight remains for second place among Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull — a battle fueled by major financial incentives.

For Las Vegas, the Grand Prix arrives at a crucial moment. Tourism has slumped in 2025 due to high travel costs and economic uncertainty. Yet F1 has been a massive economic boost, bringing an estimated $934 million to the city last year.

While fans and businesses welcome the global spotlight, locals continue to face detours and road closures.

“It can be stressful for residents,” said Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev. “But it brings worldwide attention and tourism. We’re proud to host it.”

Nvidia crushes expectations, signaling the AI market still has major upside

Nvidia, the leading force behind the artificial intelligence revolution, delivered another standout earnings report — a strong signal that both the markets and the broader economy may still have significant growth ahead.

U.S. stocks were set to surge Thursday morning after Nvidia revealed blockbuster results that reinforced the momentum of the AI boom driving much of this year’s market gains. Futures tied to the S&P 500 rose about 1%, while Nasdaq futures jumped 1.5%.

On Wednesday, Nvidia reported explosive demand for its Blackwell AI chips, with CEO Jensen Huang saying sales were “off the charts,” and other key processors were already “sold out.”

Addressing ongoing doubts about the sustainability of AI investments, Huang pushed back:
“People are talking about an AI bubble. From where we stand, we see something entirely different.”

Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives agreed, calling it “a golden quarter for Nvidia,” adding that the surge in demand proves the AI boom remains in its early stages.

Nvidia shares climbed more than 4% in after-hours trading following the report.

The company’s chips have fueled a massive wave of data center construction — now attracting more spending than all other manufacturing sectors combined, according to S&P Global. These investments have underpinned the U.S. economy even as other areas have softened.

But recent volatility in tech stocks has raised concerns about whether AI-driven market gains are slowing — and what that might mean for the economy if AI’s wealth effect tapers off.

For now, Nvidia’s strong results appear to calm those fears. Huang recently revealed that Nvidia has $500 billion in chip orders lined up across 2025 and 2026.

Still, analysts remain wary about “circular” AI investments, where major tech companies pour money into each other’s AI initiatives. Nvidia and Microsoft’s recent $10 billion commitment to AI startup Anthropic is one such example — yet neither company saw their stock price rise on the announcement.

Deutsche Bank analysts interpret this as investor caution about AI-related mega-deals intensifying.

The big question remains: Are the recent market dips just a brief reset, or a sign of a more lasting shift?

For optimists, Nvidia’s blowout performance continues to validate their confidence.

“We believe the investment boom still has runway,” Goldman Sachs analysts wrote, noting the overall economy remains resilient and supportive of future market gains.

September Sees Strong Job Growth at 119,000, But Labor Market Shows Signs of Softening
The highly anticipated employment report — initially slated for Oct. 3 — was delayed because of the government shutdown.

In September, the U.S. economy added 119,000 jobs, surpassing expectations and signaling that hiring was still relatively strong before the shutdown disrupted federal data releases.

However, a closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics data reveals a more complicated picture. Despite solid headline job growth, the labor market has recently shown signs of strain, highlighted by a wave of layoff announcements from major corporations.

Most of September’s gains came from health care, restaurants and bars, and social assistance roles. Meanwhile, manufacturing continued its decline with 6,000 jobs lost, challenging one of the Trump administration’s key economic priorities. Transportation and warehousing also saw a substantial drop, losing 25,300 positions.

The unemployment rate ticked up from 4.3% to 4.4%, partly because the labor force grew by 450,000 people, according to the BLS. Wage growth also slowed during the month.

Because of the government shutdown, Thursday’s report was postponed from its original Oct. 3 release date. Updated October employment numbers will be included in the full November report on Dec. 16, the BLS confirmed.

The lack of federal economic data over the past six weeks has made assessing the labor market increasingly difficult. But private-sector indicators suggest growing pressure on households, cooling spending, and persistent inflation.

In recent weeks, companies such as Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, Target, Paramount, General Motors, and UPS have all announced large-scale layoffs. Verizon joined them Thursday, revealing internal plans to cut 13,000 jobs.

According to Cleveland Fed data, around 39,000 workers received layoff notices in October — a figure not seen since May, and before that only during times of significant economic distress.

Another report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas counted 153,000 job cuts announced in October, though analysts caution that its methodology can vary.

Despite differing totals, one troubling indicator is clear: Job seekers are now unemployed for an average of 24.5 weeks — nearly six months — the longest stretch since late 2017.

‘An unusual market’

Tiffany Price, South Florida general manager for Job News USA, said many businesses are tightening budgets and slowing hiring. Even firms that are still recruiting are offering lower pay than experienced workers expect.

Attendance at a recent Job News fair in Broward County remained around 2,000 job seekers, but employer participation was nearly half of what it was a year earlier.

Even so, many companies report difficulty finding skilled workers. Price said both employers and applicants increasingly rely on a “post and pray” approach, which results in poor matches. More successful outcomes come from local networking and in-person outreach, she noted.

One bright spot has been hiring in local government — consistent with national trends showing steady growth in municipal jobs since the post-pandemic recovery began.

“It’s a strange market,” Price said.

The Fed is watching closely

Concerns about the labor market have become central to the Federal Reserve’s debate over future interest rate cuts. On Monday, Fed Governor Christopher Waller argued that a December rate cut is necessary to prevent further deterioration.

“My focus is on the labor market,” he said, noting that recent data has only reinforced his view that additional easing may be needed.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell struck a more cautious tone last month, acknowledging a gradual slowdown but stopping short of guaranteeing another cut.

Meeting minutes released Wednesday revealed deep divisions among policymakers. Many warned that lowering rates further could re-ignite inflation by making borrowing too easy for businesses and consumers.

“Most participants noted that…further cuts could increase the risk of inflation becoming more persistent,” the minutes said.

Still, some economists say conditions have not yet reached crisis levels. State unemployment claims remain relatively low, and ADP reported a modest rebound in hiring.

“Fears of a renewed labor market downturn…are not reflected in muted jobless claims or the pick-up in private hiring,” wrote Thomas Ryan of Capital Economics.

After $2.5B Settlement with FTC, Amazon Starts Sending Out Prime Refunds
Amazon has started distributing refunds to qualified Prime members following its $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.

The settlement, finalized in September, resolved a 2023 FTC lawsuit that accused Amazon of tricking consumers into signing up for Prime and making the cancellation process confusing and difficult.

As part of the agreement, Amazon will pay $1 billion in civil penalties and $1.5 billion directly to impacted customers. The company did not admit wrongdoing but said it wanted to move forward.

“Amazon and our executives have always complied with the law, and this settlement enables us to focus on creating new benefits for customers,” the company said in a September statement. “We work very hard to ensure signing up for or canceling Prime is clear and easy.”

Refunds began rolling out earlier this month and will continue through December, the FTC confirmed to NBC News.

How much will customers receive?

Eligible Prime members will be refunded their subscription fees, up to $51 maximum.

Who qualifies for an automatic refund?

According to the FTC, customers must:

Live in the United States and have an Amazon Prime membership.

Have signed up between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, using one of the “challenged enrollment flows” — including the universal Prime decision page, shipping selection page, single-page checkout, or Prime Video enrollment flow.

Have used three or fewer Prime benefits (such as Prime Video or Prime Music) within any 12-month period after enrolling.

How and when will refunds be delivered?

Eligible members will receive an email from Amazon between Nov. 12 and Dec. 24, offering a refund via PayPal or Venmo. Customers must accept within 15 days.

Those who prefer a paper check can simply ignore the email. Once the digital payment goes unclaimed, Amazon will send a check to the customer’s default Prime shipping address. Checks must be deposited within 60 days.

Customers who qualify for refunds but do not meet the criteria for automatic payments will be notified between Dec. 24 and Jan. 23, 2026, Amazon spokesperson Mark Blafkin told NBC News

Stock Market Drops Sharply Amid Concerns About AI and Higher Rates
A burst of early optimism on Wall Street quickly evaporated Thursday as fading expectations of a December interest-rate cut and continued weakness in bitcoin triggered a broad sell-off.

What began as a strong rally turned into a sharp market downturn, reflecting growing investor doubts about the durability of the artificial intelligence boom and skepticism about near-term support from the Federal Reserve.

The Nasdaq slid 2%, the S&P 500 dropped more than 1.5%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average — up 700 points earlier in the day — ended nearly 390 points lower. Cryptocurrencies also continued to unravel, with bitcoin falling below $87,000 just weeks after topping $120,000.

The dramatic reversal added fresh anxiety to an economy already facing persistent inflation, softening job trends and rising caution among households. With consumer spending increasingly driven by wealthier Americans, a prolonged market slump could put additional pressure on the broader economy.

“You don’t need an historic bubble for an overpriced market to decline,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak.

Markets initially surged after a stronger-than-expected September jobs report signaled economic resilience. Stocks were already positioned to climb following upbeat earnings and revenue from Nvidia, the AI chipmaker whose performance has fueled much of the sector’s recent momentum.

By midday, however, sentiment had flipped. The solid jobs data lowered the likelihood of a rate cut next month, dimming hopes for cheaper borrowing costs that often spur investment into stocks.

“The rebound in payrolls reduces the chances of a worsening unemployment rate,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote. “We no longer anticipate a Fed cut in December.”

Worries about the profitability of AI-driven companies further weighed on investors. On Wednesday night, investor Michael Burry cautioned on X that heavy use of AI chips does not necessarily translate into higher profits.

Adding to the unease, bitcoin’s continued slide suggested that retail traders — long a driving force behind buying dips — might be losing confidence.

“I wouldn't say we’ve gone from bullish to bearish,” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. “It’s more like we’ve shifted from bullish to neutral in the near term. A lot depends on whether sentiment keeps deteriorating.”

Stocks had already shown signs of weakening in recent weeks, and Thursday’s decline dragged the S&P 500 to its lowest level since September.

The long-delayed September jobs report showed the U.S. added a solid 119,000 jobs, a sign of ongoing economic strength. Though the unemployment rate edged up to 4.4%, nearly 450,000 people joined the labor force, suggesting job prospects remain relatively stable despite widespread layoffs.

Just hours before the report was published, Verizon announced it would cut 13,000 workers — around 13% of its staff — joining major companies like Amazon, GM, IBM, Microsoft, Target, Paramount and UPS in announcing large-scale layoffs.

Manufacturing lost 6,000 jobs, continuing a decline in a sector the Trump administration has prioritized. Transportation and warehousing shed more than 25,000 jobs. Wage growth slowed, and job figures for July and August were revised downward.

Most of September’s job growth came from health care, hospitality and social assistance.

Meanwhile, Walmart offered another glimpse into consumer behavior when it reported strong quarterly sales and raised its annual forecast. Executives noted that higher-income shoppers are increasingly searching for bargains while lower-income families continue to feel financial strain.

“As budgets tighten, more spending is shifting to essentials rather than discretionary goods,” Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said on Thursday’s earnings call.

Walmart shares closed up 6.5%.

Elon Musk Confirms Construction of Large-Scale xAI Data Facility in Saudi Arabia
Elon Musk and Nvidia chief Jensen Huang outlined ambitious plans to build some of the largest data centers on the planet in the Middle East, coinciding with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to the United States.

On Wednesday, Musk — who leads xAI and Tesla — revealed a major new xAI data center project in Saudi Arabia. The facility, developed in collaboration with HUMAIN AI, a company backed by the country’s sovereign wealth fund, will have a capacity of 500 megawatts and run on Nvidia’s advanced computing hardware.

For comparison, xAI’s existing Colossus 1 supercomputing site in Memphis, considered one of the world’s most powerful clusters, operates at roughly 300 megawatts.

In a separate announcement, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Amazon Web Services will build a 100-megawatt data center in the region, with plans to scale much higher — describing the project as having “gigawatt ambition and counting.” It too will rely on Nvidia’s chips.

The news follows Tuesday’s signing of a new U.S.–Saudi AI Memorandum of Understanding, which the White House says allows the kingdom access to top-tier American AI systems while safeguarding U.S. technology from foreign interference.

During an appearance at the Kennedy Center alongside Huang and Saudi communications minister Abdullah Alswaha, Musk painted a futuristic picture involving humanoid robots and space-based AI infrastructure.

Musk predicted that robots would eventually become the most valuable and widely used product globally, even suggesting that automation could make traditional work optional.

Looking further ahead, he said that within four or five years, the most affordable way to run AI computation might be through solar-powered satellites.

Musk briefly misspoke during the announcement, initially citing a 500-gigawatt data center — a scale far exceeding global data center power consumption — before joking that such a facility would cost “8 bazillion trillion dollars.

Trump White House Develops Order to Counter Government AI Rules at State Level
The Trump administration has drafted an executive order aimed at preventing individual states from creating their own artificial intelligence regulations, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

If implemented, the order would mark the latest escalation in the ongoing debate over AI governance, where policymakers continue to clash over how serious the risks are—and who should have authority to respond.

Under the proposal, President Donald Trump would instruct Attorney General Pam Bondi to form a special task force dedicated to challenging state-level AI laws. The group would contend that state regulations infringe on the federal government’s exclusive power to oversee interstate commerce, along with other legal arguments.

It remains uncertain whether Trump intends to sign the draft order, which was first reported by The Information, or how far along it is in internal review.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

Supporters of a national AI regulatory framework—including Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and several influential tech investors—argue that blocking state-by-state rules is necessary to prevent a confusing regulatory patchwork that could hinder American AI firms, particularly smaller innovators.

On the other hand, backers of state-level action say federal lawmakers have moved too slowly and that immediate safeguards are needed to address the rapidly evolving risks of AI. Many state advocates emphasize that they would prefer federal oversight, but consider local laws better than continued federal inaction.

The Center for Democracy and Technology, a nonprofit focused on digital rights, criticized the idea almost immediately.

“The president cannot nullify state laws through an executive order—period,” said Travis Hall, the group’s director of state engagement. “Only Congress has the power to preempt state legislation, and it has already considered and rejected doing so.”

In July, the Senate voted 99–1 against Cruz’s proposal to suspend state AI regulations for several years as part of a broader legislative package.

On Tuesday, Trump publicly urged Congress to restrict state AI rulemaking, writing on Truth Social: “We MUST have one Federal Standard instead of a patchwork of 50 State Regulatory Regimes.”

Just hours earlier, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., announced plans to insert language into the National Defense Authorization Act that would effectively block states from regulating AI.

Speaking at the U.S.–Saudi Investment Forum on Wednesday, Trump again criticized the idea of states individually setting AI rules.

“You can’t deal with 50 different states—you need a single approval,” he said. “Fifty states is a disaster because one overly strict state ends up setting the rules for everyone.”

Self-driving Waymo taxis will start operating on freeways with customers onboard
SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Waymo announced Wednesday that it will begin offering robotaxi trips on freeways in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area — a major milestone for the autonomous driving industry.

Until now, the company’s driverless rides have been limited to city streets. Waymo said it waited to ensure the safety of its technology before allowing vehicles to operate at the higher speeds found on freeways. After extensive testing, the company now believes it is ready for the next step.

Travel on highways and expressways has long been one of the major challenges for autonomous vehicles, joining obstacles like harsh weather conditions and intentional interference.

“This moment has been years in the making,” Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov told reporters.

“Freeways are simple to learn, but extremely difficult to master when the goal is full autonomy without a human backup — and at scale. We needed time to do it the right way,” he added.

According to Waymo spokesperson Sandy Karp, the company appears to be the first in the U.S. to provide fully driverless freeway rides — with no safety operator in the vehicle — to paying customers.

Cornell University researcher Wendy Ju noted that while freeways have fewer variables like pedestrians, their higher speeds introduce much higher risk. Autonomous cars must be able to detect potential dangers far ahead to react in time, she said. Ju expressed “cautious optimism” regarding Waymo’s progress.

During a 40-minute test ride with an NBC News reporter last week, a Waymo vehicle smoothly navigated Northern California freeways — merging, following speed limits, maintaining safe distances, and handling heavy traffic. It even avoided a human driver attempting an illegal lane change at an exit.

Competition in the robotaxi space is intensifying. Tesla recently began offering rides in Austin and the Bay Area using a prototype of its upcoming autonomous system, though human employees remain inside the cars. Zoox, an Amazon-owned company, operates a rider-only service in Las Vegas. Several Chinese companies are rapidly developing large-scale robotaxi programs as well.

Waymo’s expansion into freeway driving coincides with its broader growth strategy. The company plans to more than double the number of cities it serves, including colder locations like Denver and Detroit. Waymo also announced curbside pickup at San Jose International Airport — its second major airport after Phoenix. New vehicles, including the Zeekr RT van, will soon join its fleet, and Waymo is collaborating with Toyota to explore self-driving technology for personal vehicles.

Like Uber or Lyft, robotaxi services let users book rides through an app, but the vehicles are controlled entirely by software. Waymo cars use cameras and lidar sensors to operate without human drivers.

However, safety remains a concern. GM’s Cruise lost its California permits in 2023 after a pedestrian was dragged by one of its cars. Waymo vehicles have faced their own incidents, including vandalism and the recent death of a cat in San Francisco.

Even so, Waymo reports no human fatalities and says its autonomous vehicles have now driven over 100 million miles without a safety driver.

Texas A&M professor Srikanth Saripalli, an expert in autonomous systems, said Waymo’s safety record is strong but noted that the company has so far operated mostly in favorable climates. Proving its reliability in snowy or more complex environments remains a challenge.

Freeways account for roughly 18% of all U.S. traffic deaths, federal data shows. Waymo said it has studied dangerous scenarios such as aggressive drivers, construction zones, hydroplaning, and high-speed collisions. Employees and guests have been testing freeway rides for the past year. The rollout will occur gradually while the company monitors performance.

Waymo also emphasized that its vehicles obey posted speed limits, even if surrounding drivers do not.

“On a 65-mph freeway, that’s the top speed our vehicles will use unless a rare situation requires otherwise,” said product manager Jacopo Sannazzaro.

Freeway capability is crucial in cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix, where avoiding highways usually results in longer travel times.

As for concerns that autonomous taxis may worsen traffic congestion, Waymo disputes the idea.

“We have not observed any increase in freeway congestion in our service areas,” said Waymo product manager Pablo Abad.
